Drivers caught in phone crackdown

The six-week campaign saw 151 drivers get a £60 fixed penalty notice (FPN) and three points on their licence.

New legislation was introduced on 27 February doubling the amount of the FPN and adding the points endorsement.

A police spokesman said a similar campaign in August 2006 netted 400. "I'm pleased the numbers are down but it is still 151 too many," he said.

Acting chief inspector Nick Elton added: "It is clear that people still chose to act without thinking about their own safety or that of other people on the road."

Under the new legislation if motorists elect to have their case held by magistrates in court then a fine of up to £1,000 may be imposed with a discretionary disqualification.

Where offenders are driving goods vehicles the fine may be increased up to £2,500.
