Shannon jury deliberations go on

Karen Matthews

The jury in the Shannon Matthews trial at Leeds Crown Court has resumed its deliberations for a second day.

Shannon's mother Karen Matthews, 33, and Michael Donovan, 40, deny kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.

Nine-year-old Shannon went missing from her home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, in February.

She was found at Mr Donovan's flat in Lidgate Gardens in Batley Carr, West Yorkshire, after a 24-day search.

The prosecution told the court that Mr Donovan imprisoned Shannon in his flat as part of a plan he and Ms Matthews had to claim £50,000 in reward money.

Ms Matthews said she was "disgusted" by allegations that she was involved in her daughter's abduction.

The jury was sent out to consider its verdicts on Wednesday.
