Three held over double stabbing

Police officer by the scene of the stabbing

Three men have been arrested after a 33-year-old man was stabbed to death and another man was seriously injured.

The attack on the two men - believed to be brothers - happened in the Elland area of Halifax, West Yorkshire.

The first victim died before he arrived at hospital. The second man, aged 35, is being treated for knife wounds following the attack on Friday evening.

The three men arrested are aged 28, 39 and 50. It is not believed to be a random attack, police said.

Police have been guarding the cordoned off area between Catherine Street and Langdale Street as forensic officers comb the scene.

'Sad reflection'

David Sykes, who owns a newsagents near the scene, said: "It was an argument between two fellas and it got out of hand and two got stabbed.

"It's a very sad reflection on our society today."

Workers in a nearby chemists said they were in the shop when the attack took place.

A woman, who did not want to be named, said: "There were suddenly crowds of people around and people were running in the shop saying 'someone's been stabbed.'

"It's unusual round here but it's not unusual for the world at the moment. You just don't expect it to happen where you work."

Bunches of flowers have been laid on the pavement, close to the scene of the attack, with tributes written to the dead man.

Candles have also been left.
