Band hits a high note at contest

Grimethorpe Colliery band has retained its grip on the top spot in the English National brass band championships.

Two other Yorkshire bands, Black Dyke and Brighouse and Rastrick, secured the second and third slots at the competition in Preston.

The winners not only secured the £4,000 cash prize, but also the chance to represent England in the European Championships in Ostend in 2009.

Grimethorpe's cornet player Kevin Crockford took the soloist award.
