Praise for folding football club

A football club in West Yorkshire has been given parliamentary recognition as it approaches liquidation.

Halifax Town FC was praised by MP Linda Riodan as she tabled a motion in the House of Commons noting that "with sadness" the club "has all but folded".

The conference side faces collapse after running up debts. Supporters are planning to "keep the name alive" by reforming in a lower league.

The town's Labour MP blamed off pitch problems for the club's debt problems.

Mrs Riodan paid tribute to fans who had "loyally supported" the club over the years.

"The football club has left fans with some cherished memories," she said.

The motion was also signed by Keighley MP Ann Cryer.

The 97-year-old club went into administration during the season and was automatically relegated from the Blue Square Premier and the Blue Square North after creditors failed to accept a rescue package.

Two separate groups, the original consortium and the Supporters Trust, are still trying to save the club from liquidation.
