Cars seized in crackdown on crime

Car being removed during Operation Strikeback Police have seized more than 100 cars on two estates in Leeds and Bradford in an operation against criminals.

West Yorkshire Police also issued about 200 tickets for invalid tax on the Hawksworth estate in Leeds and the Ravenscliffe estate in Bradford.

In the joint operation with the DVLA, officers also discovered stolen vehicles and forged tax discs.

"We have successfully targeted known criminals and taken away their means of transport," West Yorkshire Police said.

Det Insp Tony Kaye, who led Operation Strikeback, said: "Criminals use and share vehicles to evade arrest and we have seized a number of these vehicles via this intelligence-led operation between the police and DVLA.

"We are trying to improve the quality of life for people living in these areas and this operation sends out a message that if you have a vehicle on the road, you need to make sure it's legal.

"Hopefully the work from this operation will have a knock-on effect on the crime which is being committed here and reduce incidents such as burglary and theft.

"We are planning to roll out this work on a larger scale and we will be moving on to other areas in the Leeds district to target known criminals with the aim of restricting their movements."
