A police officer who died following an accident in his patrol car has been described as "one of life's good guys".
Pc Conal Hills, 36, died on Sunday night after his car crashed in Bayton Lane, Yeadon, as he responded to a 999 call in the early hours of Saturday.
He lived in Leeds with his partner and two children, a seven-year-old son and two-year-old daughter.
Ch Supt Howard Crowther said Mr Hill's death was a tragedy for his family and the police force.
The officer, who was based at Weetwood police station, joined West Yorkshire Police in June 2003.
'Doing duty'
He died at Leeds General Infirmary on Sunday night. A male colleague escaped with minor injuries.
Mr Crowther said: "Conal was out in the early hours of the morning doing his duty as a police officer, responding to a call from a member of the public, and unfortunately there has been a tragic accident.
"I knew him as someone who had a really pleasant nature to him and was a well-liked officer who really enjoyed working in this area.
"His death is a tragedy not only for his family but also for his colleagues in the division and the force as a whole.
"Our thoughts are with his family at this time. Conal was one of life's good guys."
Investigations ongoing
West Yorkshire Police said an investigation into the full circumstances of the crash was ongoing.
Five men have been arrested in connection with the incident to which Mr Hills and his colleague were responding.
The force's Professional Standards Department has been notified of the incident and an investigation is under way.
On Saturday afternoon, prayers were said for the injured officer at a memorial service in Bradford to mark the first anniversary of the death of Pc Sharon Beshenivsky, who was shot on duty last year.
