Officer dies after 999 call crash

Police road block at Bayton Lane A policeman whose patrol car crashed as he responded to an emergency call at the weekend has died in hospital.

The 36-year-old was injured when his car hit a wall in Bayton Lane, Yeadon, Leeds, in the early hours of Saturday.

The officer, who was based at Weetwood police station, died at Leeds General Infirmary on Sunday night. A male colleague escaped with minor injuries.

Five men have been arrested in connection with the incident to which the officers were responding.

West Yorkshire Police said no details of the incident were being released other than the fact they were initially alerted by a member of the public.

The force's Professional Standards Department has been notified of the incident and an investigation is under way.

On Saturday afternoon, prayers were said for the injured officer at a memorial service in Bradford to mark the first anniversary of the death of Pc Sharon Beshenivsky, who was shot on duty last year.
