Birmingham is to bid to become the UK's first City of Culture.

The city council's revelation follows the government's announcement that it is looking for a city to take on the title in 2013.

The winning city could host events such as the Turner Prize, BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and The Brits as part of its year in the spotlight.

The city council said Birmingham already has a lot to offer culturally and that it is an exciting opportunity.

The city has already hosted the Sports Personality of the Year competition which was held at the National Exhibition Centre.

'Driving regeneration'

Councillor Martin Mullaney said: "Culture is not just a luxury on the fringes of every day life.

"The art and culture of a city can play a major role in driving regeneration - look at Liverpool's experience as European Capital of Culture."

Bidders will have until 16 October to submit an outline application, with a deadline of 11 December for initial bids.

Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw announced the UK Capital of Culture competition on Monday.
