Three questioned over baby death

An 18-year-old woman and two young men have been questioned over the death of a baby girl.

They were arrested on suspicion of assault and later released on police bail after the death of the four-month-old in Birmingham on New Year's Eve.

The baby, from the West Heath area of the city, was taken to hospital by ambulance two days before she died.

Birmingham City Council's Local Safeguarding Children Board has also launched an inquiry.

'Criminal investigations'

A spokesman said: "Local Safeguarding Children Boards have a statutory duty to review all child deaths, particularly those that appear to be due to abuse or neglect.

"That process has started along with criminal investigations. We are unable to comment further while these are ongoing."

A police spokesman said officers were called to West Heath just after 0730 GMT on 29 December.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out but its results are not yet known.

The men arrested are aged 20 and 22.
