Bus passenger collapsed and died

A woman who collapsed on a public bus in Walsall has died despite the efforts of a fellow passenger who tried to save her, ambulance crew said.

The woman had a cardiac arrest whilst travelling on the bus in Station Road, Aldridge at about noon on Saturday.

Paramedics said they found a teenage boy competently giving cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to an elderly woman on the floor when they arrived.

They used a defibrillator to shock her heart but she died later in hospital.

First aid

West Midlands Ambulance paramedic Jamie Painter said: "I would like to thank the teenager who was giving very effective CPR when we arrived.

"The boy, who had recently completed first aid training, remained very calm throughout and continued to help us deliver vital emergency treatment until the woman was transferred to hospital.

"Unfortunately, on this occasion the patient sadly died, however I would strongly encourage people to learn basic first aid and CPR.

"Sometimes it really does make the difference between life and death."
