Hero nursery nurse given degree

Lisa Potts

A former nursery nurse who protected youngsters from a machete attack is to receive an honorary degree.

Lisa Potts, 33, was injured in the attack at the school in Wolverhampton in July 1996.

Ms Potts was awarded the George Medal after confronting paranoid schizophrenic Horrett Campbell.

She will be awarded an Honorary Fellowship at Wolverhampton University in recognition of the charity work she carried out after the attack.

Ms Potts appeared in police recruitment television and cinema advertisements.

She also joined a community-based project in the Black Country, providing care for young children and their parents.

Campbell attacked 18 children with a machete as a teddy bears picnic was being held in the grounds of St Luke's Church of England Primary School in Wolverhampton.

Campbell, who was 33 at the time, was ordered to be detained indefinitely at a psychiatric hospital after being convicted of seven counts of attempted murder.

Ms Potts is to receive her degree on Friday.
