Khyra couple face murder charge

Khyra Ishaq

The mother and stepfather of a seven-year-old girl who allegedly starved to death have appeared in court charged with her murder.

Khyra Ishaq was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital from her home in Handsworth, Birmingham, in May.

Her mother, Angela Gordon, 33, and Ms Gordon's partner Junaid Abuhamza, 29, were kept in custody after appearing before Birmingham Magistrates' Court.

They are scheduled to appear before the city's crown court on 4 November.

The Crown Prosecution Service announced last week it had authorised West Midlands Police to charge the couple, both of Leyton Road, Handsworth, with murder following a detailed review of the case.
