Two in hospital after shop fire

An adult and a child have been taken to hospital suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke after a fire in the Sparkbrook area of Birmingham.

Emergency services were called to Stratford Road in the early hours after the fire started in a terraced shop, which has a flat above it.

Stratford Road was closed between Formans Road and Shaftmoor Lane.

The fire service said about half of the building was damaged by the blaze, which is being treated as suspicious.
