New Street revamp plan 'on track'

Plans for New Street Station A project to modernise Birmingham's New Street Station at a cost of £500m is on course, the chairman of the committee overseeing the scheme said.

The scheme, which is being supported by Network Rail and other groups, is awaiting government approval.

Mike Whitby, chairman of the committee and city council leader, said UK growth will be hindered if such national-scale transport hubs remain dilapidated.

The plans to transform the station were announced in February 2006.

'Unlock potential'

Mr Whitby said: "There is little doubt that the rebuilding of New Street Station is one of the most important infrastructure (developments) in Birmingham since the construction of our landmark buildings - the NEC and ICC - almost two decades ago.

"The ball is in the government's court - we are waiting on them to deliver.

"If the government is serious about its growth agenda, it needs to unlock the full potential of the country's major regional cities, with Birmingham the most economically important among them."

The project announced last year, called Birmingham Gateway, is mainly concerned with the appearance of the station, plus its shopping and facilities above the platforms.

The work, which would include a new enlarged airport-style concourse and a glass roof, is expected to start in 2008 and last about four and a half years, it was announced.
