Murder inquiry after fatal fire

The death of a 54-year-old man in a house fire is being treated as murder after forensic tests showed it was started deliberately.

Mahinder Singh Kalsi died from breathing in smoke after the fire in Birchfield Road, in Aston, Birmingham.

Two other men were taken to hospital following the blaze on 18 May.

"We can now confirm the fire is being treated as arson and this incident is now a murder inquiry," said a West Midlands police spokesman.

"Police have been speaking to both residents and passers-by and would like to re-appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen anything suspicious."
