Arson estate is hit by more fires

An area hit by arson attacks has been targeted again after 10 wheelie bins were set on fire in Sunderland.

Firefighters attended the incidents in Millfield over the weekend, a week after they were called to 24 car blazes on the same streets and estates nearby.

Assistant chief fire officer Dave Simpson said that the huge number of call-outs was costing the fire service thousands of pounds.

Mr Simpson could not confirm that the bin fires and car fires were linked.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said that a 19-year-old man and a 33-year-old man had been arrested and released on bail after the car fires.

No arrests have been made in connection to the wheelie bin fires.

Mr Simpson, of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said that the incidents were under investigation by the local neighbourhood teams.
