Couple injured in Mumbai shooting

A couple from Northumberland were among those injured during attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai, in which at least 100 people have been killed.

Diane Murphy, 58, from Hexham, was shot in the foot when terrorists stormed the Leopold Cafe on Wednesday.

Her husband Michael, 59, was shot in the ribs and remains in intensive care after having his spleen removed.

The retired teachers, who were on holiday, had just arrived in the cafe after a trip to the cinema.

Gunmen targeted at least seven sites in the city, which is the business capital of India, late on Wednesday.

'It was carnage'

These included two luxury hotels where there were reports that people had been taken hostage.

At least 100 people were killed in the attacks and a further 300 injured.

Mrs Murphy, who is in hospital, said: "All of a sudden there was automatic gunfire. The whole place fell apart.

"It was tremendously loud. My husband and I were hit, as were lots of people.

"There were obviously people injured and others who were dead.

"It was mayhem. There were so many casualties. It was carnage."
