Farmer beaten with piece of wood

A farmer was beaten with a piece of wood in a raid on a County Durham farm.

Police said the 70-year-old was attacked by two men who stole property from a vehicle at Broom Hill Day Spa near Ferryhill, on Sunday evening.

His elderly wife was assaulted when she tried to come to his aid, a spokesman said. The couple were treated at the scene for cuts, bruises and shock.

Two men, aged 18 and 19, are now being questioned after being arrested on suspicion of assault.
