Crews rescue man from flat fire

A 78-year-old man was treated in hospital after being rescued from a fire in Sunderland.

Fire crews were called to the second floor of a 15-storey block of flats in Gilley Law on Saturday night after reports of a kitchen fire.

They entered the smoke-filled flat using breathing apparatus to rescue the man who had already put out the fire.

The man was given oxygen at the scene before being taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital by ambulance.
