Stadium of Light damaged by fire

Stadium of Light A stand at Sunderland's football ground has been damaged in a severe fire.

Emergency services were called to the Stadium of Light on Wednesday morning, where the Director's Suite on the third floor of the West Stand was alight.

Eleven fire crews brought the blaze under control. The damage is described as severe, but the full extent is not yet known.

An investigation is under way, but overheated electrical equipment in the bar area is thought to be to blame.

The premises were empty at the time and no-one was injured.

Dave Turpin, group manager for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "Our crews have acted swiftly to this incident and I would like to praise them for their professionalism.

"The fire has occurred in the directors' suite and has caused severe damage.

"We are currently investigating the cause of the fire."
