Parents arrested over baby death

A couple have been arrested on suspicion of murdering their five-month-old baby in County Durham.

Police were alerted after the child was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital a week ago with head injuries.

The youngster, from Bournmoor, near Chester-le-Street, was later transferred to Newcastle General Hospital, where she died on Wednesday.

The baby's parents - a 25-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman - were released on bail pending further inquiries.

A Durham Police spokesman said detectives were awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination carried out by a Home Office pathologist.
