Sedgefield by-election date set

Tony Blair A date has been set for the by-election in Tony Blair's former constituency of Sedgefield in County Durham.

Mr Blair announced he was stepping down as an MP with immediate effect on Wednesday evening.

Local returning officers confirmed on Friday that the by-election will be held on 19 July.

There was a reminder that anyone who had not yet registered for a postal vote but wished to do so had until 4 July to complete their applications.

Mr Blair's announcement came hours after the confirmation of his appointment as a Middle East envoy for the US, Russia and the EU.

On Wednesday, Mr Blair said his new role would prevent him visiting the area, and that it was "only right that the constituency has a full-time member of parliament".

He had represented Sedgefield since 1983 and at the 2005 General Election increased his majority to 18,457.
