Teacher confirmed with swine flu

The head teacher of a Tyneside school has been diagnosed with swine flu.

Paul Naughton, from Sacred Heart RC Primary School, in Byermoor, Gateshead, is receiving treatment at home and is doing well, Gateshead Council said.

It said it was working closely with the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the advice was that the school should remain open.

Pupils and members of staff are being advised to go to the school as normal, provided they are well.

Council group director of learning and children Maggie Atkinson said: "The HPA acknowledges that swine flu is now widespread in the general community so there is nothing to gain from closing the school.

"The school is keeping parents and staff closely informed of the situation and has advised parents to monitor their children and, should they show any signs of being unwell, to contact their GP or NHS Direct for advice.

"They should not attend the GPs' surgery or A&E depatments in person."
