German team for Sir Bobby match

Lothar Matthaus

The footballer who led Germany to their 1990 World Cup win is the latest to sign up for a fundraising match organised by Sir Bobby Robson.

Lothar Matthaus will captain his country when they take on an England side in the match at St James' Park in Newcastle on 26 July.

Stars of the England team will include Paul Gascoigne and Peter Shilton.

Proceeds from the match will go to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation for cancer research and treatment.

The game will revisit the two countries' semi-final match in 1990 when England, managed by Sir Bobby, lost on penalties to Germany.

Other German players who have signed up include Steffen Freund, Thomas Helmer and Freddi Bobic.
