Sign proclaims love from rooftop

A mystery Romeo has declared his love from on high, by inscribing a romantic message on the Tyneside skyline.

The giant white "carpets" sign on the 50ft (15.2m) rooftop of Storey Carpets in Byker has been tampered with to spell out "I love U".

The company said that a lot of time and effort must have gone into changing the 15ft (4.5m) letters.

Employee Lisa Armstrong said they were keen to find out who did it. She added: "He's a bit of a Romeo isn't he?"

Staff thought it was a joke when a passer-by alerted them to the loving message.

"The only thing that we can think of is that it is possibly a proposal or something like that," Ms Armstrong said:

"It is really sweet and humorous as well. It's really nice to think that somebody has gone to all that effort."

She said the firm would not prosecute whoever had tampered with the sign.

"We just want whoever it was to come forward because if there's a story behind it, we would just like to know what it is, and what the outcome was."
