An MP has secured a Parliamentary debate on the impact of devastating floods in Northumberland.

Sir Alan Beith, Lib Dem MP for Berwick, will be raising the issue of warning systems, the cost of reconstruction, and the effect on the local economy.

Areas around Morpeth and Rothbury were badly hit in September when a month's rainfall fell in one day. It was the region's worst flooding for 50 years.

The debate is scheduled for the evening of 20 October.

Lost everything

Sir Alan said: "The economic cost to local businesses and farmers will be enormous and I am very concerned about the long term impact on Northumberland's economy.

"I also hope to raise the problems encountered by the harbour commissioners at Amble, where the harbour wall has been undermined by the force of the water."

He added: "We are all extremely glad that no lives were lost and no serious injuries inflicted during the floods, and are grateful to the tremendous effort of all involved in helping.

"However, the impact felt by people who have had to leave their homes, some of whom have lost everything, cannot be underestimated."
