An 11-year-old girl may need surgery after being hit in the eye by a pellet fired from a BB gun, police said.
The youngster, from Blyth, Northumberland, was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital after being injured on Saturday evening.
A spokesman said there was no risk of her losing sight in the eye but she may need an operation to repair damage.
Police are now speaking to an eight-year-old boy in connection with the shooting.
Sgt George Cottiss, of Northumbria Police, said: "While some people may see BB guns as little more than toys, the implications of misusing them can be anything but fun and people can be seriously injured."
