Girl car death officer suspended

A police officer who was driving a car which hit and killed a Newcastle teenager has been suspended from duty.

Hayley Adamson, 16, was struck by the marked police car, which was tracking another vehicle, as she crossed the city's Denton Road on 19 May.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Hundreds of mourners are expected to attend Miss Adamson's funeral service at West Road Cemetery this afternoon.

Pupils from Sacred Heart High School in Newcastle, where the teenager was due to sit her GCSE exams in the week of the incident, will also pay their respects.

Miss Adamson's family released a statement after her death which said: "Our beautiful daughter filled people's lives with love, fun and laughter."

The IPCC is yet to establish if the patrol car's emergency blue lights and siren were in use at the time of the crash.
