Death crash car had headlights on

The police car which hit and killed a 16-year-old girl had its headlights on, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has found.

Hayley Adamson, 16, was struck as she crossed Newcastle's Denton Road, late on Monday night.

Some witnesses had claimed the vehicle was driving without headlights.

But the IPCC said its initial findings revealed that they were on but it still had to be determined whether the siren or emergency lights were activated.

Analysis of the vehicle's in-car computer systems was continuing, and tests were also being carried out to determine the speed at which the police car was travelling before the collision and at the moment of impact.

The IPCC added that family liaison managers had met Miss Adamson's family to explain the IPCC's role and update them on the progress of the investigation.

Specialist accident scene investigators from Durham Constabulary have also been brought in to assist in the investigation.

Miss Adamson, who lived with her mother in Cedar Road, Fenham, Newcastle had been due to sit her GCSE English exam on Tuesday.

The teenager had celebrated her 16th birthday in March.
