Taxi driver attacked and robbed

Two men who stabbed a taxi driver during a robbery are being sought by police on Tyneside.

The 31-year-old had picked up two men and two women at West Denton early on Thursday morning and took them to Byker, where the women got out.

A short time later, in nearby Whickam Gardens, the taxi driver was punched in the face, stabbed in the chest, and his wallet stolen.

He is being treated in hospital where his condition is described as stable.

The men are described as wearing dark hooded tops. One had a dark and one a white cap.
