Flat-pack homes go on the market

The BoKlok development will be built in Gateshead
BoKlok development People with low incomes on Tyneside are being offered the chance to buy an affordable flat-pack home.

The timber-framed BoKlok structures, costing up to £150,000 will be built near Gateshead International Stadium.

They will be available only to those earning between £15,000 and £35,000, who are not already homeowners.

Potential purchasers can apply at Ikea in MetroCentre on Friday and Saturday. If demand is high, the homes might eventually be allocated by lottery.

The homes include flats and townhouses with up to three bedrooms, with prices starting at £99,500.

Sixty are available at first with further rental units due to be released in 2008.

The application process will involve filling in a form, followed by an interview to determine financial circumstances.

Alan Prole, managing director of Live Smart @ Home, the company licensed to build BoKlok properties in the UK, said: "There has already been significant interest via the website and now this will give even more people the opportunity to come in to find out more and to apply to buy a home.

"We must stress that no homes will be sold on the day and we guarantee that everyone who qualifies will get an equal opportunity to purchase a BoKlok home."

Work on the St James site is already under way and the first homes should be ready to move into in January 2008.
