Praise for hero police rescue dog

Jake the police dog with Pc Alistair Cairnie-Coates and Alyson Lockwood A hero police dog that saved a missing woman's life, has come in for praise from the rescue centre that saved him.

Jake, a German Shepherd with Northumbria Police, found a missing 39-year-old woman collapsed in bushes in South Tyneside last month.

The dog was just seven-weeks-old when he was found tied to a lamppost after being abused by youths with fireworks.

He has been given a special award by the German Shepherd Dog Rescue and Rehoming Centre.

The three-year-old received the Ted Trophy from the centre for his "exceptional" actions.

'Very proud'

Jake's handler Pc Alistair Cairnie-Coates said he was delighted with his dog's success after he had such a poor start in life.

He said: "I'm very proud of him and glad he's getting the recognition he deserves.

"It's amazing how well he's doing after having such a bad start in life.

"He just gets on with it and I'm sure he will be an asset to the force in the years to come."

Alyson Lockwood of the rehoming centre, said: "We are delighted that Jake has found a job that he enjoys.

"Considering the ordeal he went through as a puppy, he is such a confident and boisterous dog."

The woman Jake found is now recovering after receiving hospital treatment.
