Woman injured in beauty spot fall

Marsden A woman was seriously injured when her vehicle went over the cliffs at a popular beauty spot in South Tyneside.

Emergency services were called to Marsden Grotto early on Saturday morning by a member of the public who spotted the 29-year-old on the beach.

Her Land Rover had gone through a fence crash barrier and plunged 80ft (24m). She had suffered multiple injuries but managed to get free of the wreck.

Paramedics gave emergency treatment at the scene.

She was then transported off the beach by stretcher using the lift of the nearby public house, and taken to South Tyneside General Hospital.

Her condition is described as poorly but not life-threatening.

Northumbria Police are carrying out an investigation into the incident.
