Two binmen had to jump from their vehicle after it caught fire as they drove along between collections.
A rogue item in recycled rubbish is being blamed for the freak incident in the Kirkheaton area of Northumberland.
Householders have been warned to take extra care about the type of materials left in recycling bins after the blaze, which completely destroyed the vehicle.
Castle Morpeth Council said hot ashes, a discarded cigarette or unused matches may have been responsible.
Doug Phillips, executive member for the environment, said: "The two men on the wagon had a lucky escape.
Legitimate items
"They spotted the smoke as they drove along and managed to park up in a lay-by and get out just in time, before the whole wagon caught fire.
"These vehicles cost around £115,000 to buy new and due to this one being nearly three years old, this blaze could cost council tax payers tens of thousands of pounds.
"We believe the fire could have been caused by hot ashes a discarded cigarette or unused matches combusting.
"I would urge householders to ensure that they only place legitimate items in blue recycling bins.
"On this occasion we have only lost a vehicle; it could have been far worse."
Castle Morpeth Council collects refuse and recycled goods from more than 21,000 homes and businesses.
