Fans arrested during derby match

Police arrested 14 fans for public order offences during the derby game between Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Supporters of both teams were taken into custody after the match, which finished as a one-all draw, at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.

Supt Steve Sugden said Sunderland fans were kept back after the match to prevent post-match violence.

He said: "It was a lively football match, but on the whole fans were well-behaved."

"There was a little difficulty at the end of the match, when some away fans left the stadium through unauthorised exits and began to make their way to the coach parks," he added.

"However, officers policing the match managed to keep this situation under control and enable these fans to make their way from the stadium in a safe and orderly manner."

A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of affray, 10 men face public order charges and three men were bailed pending further inquiries.
