Cameras installed in school loos

Head teacher at Thornaby Community School, Linda Russell-Bond, said the surveillance devices only faced the sinks and not the toilet cubicles.

The cameras had also been installed to keep an extra eye on school property after children and staff had gone home in the evening.

Ms Russell-Bond added the CCTV system did not invade pupils' privacy.

She said: "The school is used for out-of-school activities and at those times there isn't the provision for people to supervise the areas.

"This means if there is any vandalism during out of school hours we can then find out who has caused the problem."
