Witnesses to student death traced

Most of the witnesses to an incident in East Sussex which led to the death of 16-year-old foreign student have been traced, police have said.

Mohammed Al-Majed suffered a serious head injury outside a takeaway in Hastings on 22 August.

Sussex Police said they had carried out "pain-staking examination" of CCTV footage to establish where relevant individuals were that night.

Two men were charged with offences over events leading up to his death.

Mr Al-Majed died in Kings College Hospital, London, two days later.

He had spent five weeks in the town and was due to return to Qatar the following week.

'Build a picture'

Det Ch Insp Trevor Bowles and Det Insp Mike Ashcroft, said their inquiry continued to yield vital information.

In a statement, they said: "There has, as you would expect, been extensive and pain-staking examination of CCTV cameras in the immediate area of the kebab hut and other areas of Hastings town centre.

"It is important, not least, in an attempt to identify other potential witnesses.

"However, we believe that most, if not all, of the witnesses have in fact been traced."

Paul Rockett, 20, of Ham Lane, Burwash, appeared at Hastings Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with racially aggravated common assault.

He was granted bail until 26 November after entering no plea.

Alexander Quinn, 18, of Mountbatten Close, Hastings, has also been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was bailed until 23 January by Eastbourne magistrates last month.

Mr Quinn's charge related to an attack on a foreign national and a friend of Mr Al-Majed, police said.
