A supermarket has apologised after a member of staff refused to sell alcohol to a grandmother because she did not have any ID.
Tina MacNaughton-Jones, 47, of Worthing, Sussex, was told she could not buy wine at the town's Waitrose because she could not prove her age.
Her 22-year-old daughter, who had ID, offered to buy the wine but was refused because she might "give it to her".
Waitrose said a member of staff had been a "little overzealous".
'Are you serious?'
Grandmother-of-two Mrs MacNaughton-Jones said: "I said 'Are you speaking to me?' because I thought she might mean my daughter who was with me and she's 22.
"And she [the member of staff] said 'yes'. So I said 'No I haven't got any ID on me' you know, are you serious?
"She said 'I don't think you look old enough'. So then my daughter said 'Well, I'm 22, you know this is my mum'. And I said this is my daughter and she said 'well I don't believe it'."
Her daughter was then told she could not buy the wine despite having ID because she may have given it to Mrs MacNaughton-Jones.
A spokesman for Waitrose said: "As a responsible retailer, we work hard to ensure we only sell alcohol to those who are entitled to buy it.
"However, on this occasion it appears we were a little overzealous and apologise for any embarrassment caused."
