Man hurt in town centre shooting

Police officers and vehicles in Lewes A man has been seriously injured in a shooting in Lewes town centre, Sussex Police have said.

Officers said they were called to Southover High Street in the East Sussex town by a member of the public on Tuesday evening.

A spokesman for the force said the injured man had been taken to hospital.

He said the incident at about 1920 BST had involved a firearm. Local residents described the area as quiet, and said they were shocked by what had happened.

Southover High Street was closed on Tuesday evening while police investigations were carried out.
