Dog attacks deer in Sussex park

A deer in Stanmer Park, Brighton, was chased by a greyhound, whose collar became caught on the animal's antlers.

But when volunteers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service arrived at the scene on Friday, they found the deer had already been freed.

Duty co-ordinator Maz Marriot said rangers looked for the deer, but could not see it lying injured anywhere.

Swan attacked

"The owner of the greyhound had never seen deer at the park before and was not expecting the dog to find one, let alone chase one," he said.

Two days earlier, his team rescued a badly injured swan, following an attack by an "out of control" dog at Hove Lagoon.

The bird is being treated at a swan sanctuary where it is still in a critical condition.

East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) has urged all dog walkers to take care when walking their pets and ensure they are kept under control.
