Dangerous vehicles stopped on A22

Police stop (generic)

Police stopped 49 vehicles in a five-hour operation to crack down on speeding, dangerous vehicles and anti-social driving on the A22 in Surrey.

Wednesday's operation in Whyteleafe was prompted by residents' concerns about the volume of speeding traffic, raised at neighbourhood meetings with police.

A 28-year-old man from Caterham was arrested and charged with possessing an offensive weapon and drink driving.

Another 39 drivers were found to be committing various offences.

Ten were reported for not having tax discs, four were issued with fixed penalty notices and six were cautioned by the Environment Agency for not having appropriate waste licences.

Nineteen vehicles were found not to be roadworthy during the afternoon and early evening.
