Bogus callers pose as fire crews

Bogus callers claiming to be from the fire service in Surrey are operating across the county, police have warned.

Officers said the cold-callers visit people's homes and either claim to represent Surrey fire service or fraudulently impersonate firefighters.

The callers try to get cash by offering advertising space or asking for charitable donations, a spokesman said.

He said all genuine personnel were required to wear their full uniform when dealing with the public.

They were also required to provide identification on request as part of a strict policy on door-to-door activity, he added.

A statement from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said it currently had "no direct association with any companies selling advertising".

It said it strongly warned residents against talking to anyone calling at their door claiming to be working for the fire service.
