Beauty spot crackdown on bikers

Motorbikes (generic)

Police in Surrey are targeting beauty spots used as meeting places by bikers over the bank holiday weekend in a crackdown on irresponsible riders.

Box Hill, at Tadworth, and Newlands Corner, near Guildford, and the routes in between will be patrolled by police in marked and unmarked vehicles.

"This is about reducing the number of people being killed or injured," said Ch Insp Stuart Sang.

Bikers are 1% of road users, but 25% of the people who die on Surrey's roads.

'Respect residents'

Mr Sang said police would be checking motorcyclists complied with speed limits, displayed the correct registration plate and were on the road legally.

Those found to be breaking the law face being fined, arrested or having their bikes seized.

"We welcome motorcyclists into the county but they must respect residents and other road users," said Mr Sang.

"Anti-social riding will not be tolerated and, if you break the law, you will be prosecuted."

The bank holiday crackdown marks the start of a four-week safety campaign to raise awareness of the vulnerability of motorcyclists with both car drivers and bikers.
