Beer brewed for troops' charity

AH 6.4 beer and its namesake.

A new beer commissioned for a Suffolk army base is raising money for troops.

The drink was brewed as a present for soldiers of 4 Regiment Army Air Corps, based at Wattisham, near Ipswich, from an officer who was leaving the base.

But the brew, called AH 6.4 after the Apache helicopter which is based at Wattisham, is so popular Bartrams Brewery will carry on producing it.

Now 10p from every bottle sold will be made to the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA).

The association provides support for the serving men and women who have, or are, serving in the armed forces. SSAFA also looks after their families and dependants.

"I know soldiers like the odd tipple"
Lt Col Neil Dalton

Lt Col Neil Dalton said: "I was looking for an original gift to make as a presentation when I left my regiment.

"When someone mentioned the idea to me I knew it was perfect. Despite not being a beer drinker myself I know soldiers like the odd tipple.

"I thought it appropriate to make a link to the charity."

Bartrams Brewery chose to mix British and American hops as the Apache is made by both countries.

The design of the label incorporates the regimental red and green colours and lists the regiment's battle honours.
