Ban on street drinking extended

A crackdown on drinking alcohol in the streets has been extended to four new areas of Suffolk.

Signs have been erected to mark out new zones where drinking is banned in Wickham Market, Saxmundham, Kelsale-cum-Carlton and Felixstowe.

Suffolk Coastal District Council has obtained clearance to impose regulations in those areas.

"Police have more powers to tackle drinking in public," said Sherrie Green, member for community health.

"The town and parish councils of these areas recognised the need to create these designated zones.

"They mean that in those areas police can deal with anyone misbehaving or acting in an anti-social manner while drinking alcohol and can seize any in their possession.

"We have already introduced similar restrictions in other areas of Felixstowe, in Leiston, Woodbridge, Framlingham, Kesgrave, Martlesham and Rushmere St Andrew and they have helped the police improve the quality of life for those who live there."
