An NHS stop-smoking campaign is claiming success in helping nearly 3,000 people quit tobacco.
Between 1 April and 16 January 2,598 people have been helped to give up tobacco through the Suffolk Stop Smoking Service.
Department of Health figures show the county has a quit rate of 429 per 100,000 of people aged 16 and over.
Clinics to support and help people to give up smoking were set up in pubs, social clubs and community centres.
1,200 deaths
Sally Hogg, from the Suffolk Primary Care Trust, said: "We have been working very closely with the Suffolk Stop Smoking Services and we are delighted that these figures show our joint approach is working well.
"In recent months we have developed a number of new ways of encouraging more people to give up smoking.
"We are also offering a wider range of information at group sessions using outside speakers with exercise and stress management expertise and midwives are helping mothers to give up during pregnancy.
"Smoking still kills 1,200 people every year in Suffolk and is the biggest preventable cause of death."
