Greene King sales hotting up

Greene King brands Suffolk-based brewer Greene King has seen a surge in beer sales - thanks to the heatwave.

With takings up overall by 6%, sales of pub favourites Old Speckled Hen and Abbott Ale were up were up 17% and 4% respectively.

The company said the summertime beer boom meant trading in the first 12 weeks of its current financial year was likely to be "a little ahead" of expectations.

Last month the company announced annual profits of £75m, up 8% on the previous year.

The brewing company, based in Bury St Edmunds, now owns 1,700 pubs in the south and east of England after its acquisition of the rival Morrells business last year.

Greene King paid £67m for Morrells in June last year, in a deal which strengthened its presence in the Thames Valley area.
