An Army regiment of about 1,200 soldiers is set to move to a Staffordshire town.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that Beacon Barracks in Stafford was its "preferred location" for 1 Signal Brigade when it relocates from Germany.
The brigade, which specialises in communications, is set to move to the town from Rhine Garrison in 2013.
The move is subject to further planning permission and examination but has been welcomed by Stafford Borough Council.
The barracks is already home to the 22nd Signal Regiment which returned from serving in Afghanistan in February.
Deputy Leader of the Council Judith Dalgarno said soldiers and their families were already an integral part of the community.
"This is wonderful news," she said. "The people of Stafford Borough have a long and special relationship with the servicemen and women and their families who have made this area their home."
