Giant pottery sculpture arrives

A five-tonne pottery sculpture has been brought to Staffordshire to commemorate the area's pottery-making heritage.

The Tunstall Shard is made of metal and is planned for a business park in Scotia Road, Stoke-On-Trent, on the former site of a Wedgwood factory.

It was designed by sculptor Robert Erskine and commissioned by the Tunstall business park developers.

Pottery workers face uncertainty after Wedgwood previously announced it was in administration and seeking a buyer.

The Tunstall Shard measures 25 ft (7.6m) high by 23 ft (7m) wide and is about the size of two double decker buses.

It cost £50,000 and was built by engineers at Midas Technologies in Peterborough.

The sculpture was transported to Staffordshire under police escort along the M6 on Sunday.
